Just routine messages about successfully starting hibernation and
awakening--nothing about what triggered them.
I have turned on all debugging options for pm-suspend.

Nothing apparently pertinent,

The problem apparently was associated with false battery power
signals. The problem went away after one of the Ubuntu updates--I
never pinned down which.
For the current problem, as a last resort, I am considering
deactivating every entry in directories:
/etc/pm/sleep.d
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d
by doing "chmod -x *" in each one.
