cntrl-alt-F1 ... how to get back?

Would that customization be stored in the /home or /home/<me>
directory?  Those are the only things left from my old installation
since I finally installed afresh instead of continued to upgrade.
Otherwise, how could I tell if an old stray is attached to vt7?
