10.04 rc update problems

At text mode, can you log in? (it will prompt for password), 
update and upgrade (at text mode)
Then type 'dpkg-reconfigure gdm'.
Then 'startx' or 'sudo gdm start'.
Hopefully you will be at graphics mode.
