Supposing you are both running Ubuntu, perhaps:

"System / Preferences / Remote Deskop (preferences) at your mom's

and Applications / Internet / Remote Desktop Viewer at yours?

Remember to check mom's Firewall config (SSH port 22 open just for your 
IP or desktop)
