Problems installing 10.04-beta2

Karl: thank you for your answer, which doesn't help at all...

My existing hard drive is fine, I'm using it now, it just is too
small. Before swapping it out I wanted to see what 10.04 looks like on
this laptop, so I wanted to run it before I go to the trouble of
installing it on the new drive, this is beta software after all. I'm
running AMD64 now, so I assume that I don't need to go to a single CPU
version of Ubuntu and can stay with the AMD64 version.

As I said before, I can hear that the live version completes the
installation, I just can't see it. I guess if I can't get an answer
from the group I could just go for broke - swap drives and do
alternate installation on the new drive, see how that works, if it
doesn't just swap drives back and look elsewhere for an answer.
