Update: got the ipod touch restored, all works well with gtkpod on
karmic. Today I plugged it into lucid & allowed Rythmbox to open when
the touch was plugged in via the usb. Bam... same thing happened as
before; music on the touch was blank. I found that Rythmbox (lucid) had
not actually deleted any music on the device, but had set the iTunesDB
and iTunesDB.ext files to 0. Had to restore the files from the backup &
resync via gdtpod to get everything back to normal.
I'm off to launchpad to see if I can find a Rythmbox bug already filed.
