Spamassassin is more of a server thing. It is possible to get it working
with TBird. However, if you're getting your mail through another provider
(IE, not running your own mail server) then the Bayesian classifier that is
built into TBird is more than adequate to weed out any spam which gets through
the first, generalized, layer of protection provided by your email provider.

However if you're running your own mail (real, not fetchmail) mail server
then having SMTP time filtering provided by SA is a good first step.
Personally I run my own mail server, do SMTP time filtering with SA and still
have TBird's own bayesian classifier as backup.
