Turns out it's my favorite bit of buggy software: gfvs.

Plug in camera, unmount.

Do a ps auxw | grep -i gphoto, then kill that process (gvfs-gphoto).

Turn off camera, turn camera back on.

$ gphoto2 --camera "Canon PowerShot A520 (PTP mode)" --port usb:
--set-config=capture=on
 value on, t 1

$ gphoto2 --camera "Canon PowerShot A520 (PTP mode)" --port usb: --capture-image
New file is in location /store_00010001/DCIM/211CANON/IMG_1112.JPG on the camera
