I plugged the monitor into the external VGA port on my laptop and used
it as an external monitor for a short while. Seemed to work fine. Then
I went and plugged it into the desktop and it seems fine too. But I've
only had it up for little more than 1/2 an hour, and the symptoms have
not presented themselves (yet).

I can try that as well, but don't have a spare monitor to test with.
