I recently noticed this too on my Karmic install, although in my case
it's an update-manager distribution upgrade to whatever state Karmic
was in about a month ago. I've been updating pretty much religiously
every day since then of course.

But here, Karmic is installed in a Windows partition via wubi (that's
how I installed the system back in December, and at that time it was
Intrepid). It's also a relatively new Fujitsu Lifebook dual-core.

But recently (about a week ago) I started getting "buffer I/O errors"
on /dev/loop0 (that's the root disk "image" when I never saw these
messages before. I even copied the root.disk image to a spare file
with cp and experienced no issues reading the file. This is odd
because it only happens during the shutdown process.
