I use essentially the same setup like you but atm on a debian lenny box
and with a different dsl modem. You can't ping the modem because it doesn't
have a IP address, pppoe works on a lower layer.
In your setup please come back with the output of
# pppoe -I eth0 -A
on my box it shows:
# pppoe -I eth1 -A
Access-Concentrator: ewetel.dsl-erx03-Oldenburg
