PPPOE+DLINK DSL 520B

I want to build a router with ubuntu server 9.04.
I use 2 ethernet card eth1 and eth0.
eth0 is connected to the Dlink dsl 520B (DSL Modem) and eth1 is connected to
the switch.
but why I can not ping the modem. and $ pon dsl-provider doesn't work.
