The linked http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=523015 seems the
definitive explanation of the issue.

What's disappointing here is the Gnome bug was reported 2008-03-17,
and a workaround implemented 2008-03-19
Two days.  Here we are 18 months later without a fix in any version of Ubuntu.
