Virtual keyboards are something I havent used a lot...though I believe
that you might be able to use gok (gnome onscreen keyboard). Also, it
may be worth some time to look at getting the ubuntu NBR desktop
installed on the thing, which i think comes with it's own onscreen
keyboard thing.
to get gok just do a "sudo apt-get install gok" with another keyboard
attached.
To get past the need to use a keyboard when logging in, you could always
just do an automatic login...though since its a UMPC i think that
probably would be a huge security issue, so all the associated warnings
go along with that...

for the wifi, did you try the "System > Administration > Hardware
Drivers" route to see if theres some restricted driver in there to get
your wireless working?
