look at 'top or 'htop' and sort process by cpu usage. That will give you
an idea.

Do you have an indexer running? Google Desktop, begale, etc? Those can
eat up cpu. The system sounds like a laptop. On board graphics? Do you
use compiz? Lots of possibilities.
