Double pfff. Why? In the first place, it's not necessarily convenient, and
in the second the phpmyadmin interface can make a lot of the administration
of a database intuitively obvious. I run a postgres in a VM on which
phppgadmin is easily the simplest way to administer the server (because I
can lock down IP access to "localhost").

Which of course you could do with phpmyadmin.

No, it's probably a _little_ better than phpmyadmin

And that's just plain insulting. I personally use python, but he's not
asking for help programming in php, he's asking how to use a specific
application.

Yuck. That's worse than php.

This, of course, is why I haven't provided any specifics, as I don't
actually use MySQL, I use Postgres. And I use phppgadmin, PgAdmin III, and
psql at the command line, about equally. However, the phppgadmin, pgadmin,
and pypmyadmin interfaces are all pretty similar.
I rather suspect that the issue with phpmyadmin is that, iirc, a default
MySQL installation is not accessible via IP. Which is a reasonably good
reason for trying mysql-query-browser first.
