You might try 2 things:

1. See if 8.04 (Hardy) liveCD boots ok.
2. With the 9.04 (Jaunty) liveCD: at the main startup screen (shows "Try
Ubuntu without any change...") press F8 and then enter:
 rootdelay=90(F8)
That's: (space)rootdelay=90(press F8 key again)
If it boot's w/#2 then it's probably related to 290153.
