lsmod | grep ipw shows ipw2200 and ieee80211 which it should considering 
wi-fi functioned on two separate occasions.

I would rather wait for Hardy to come up with the upgrade.

Could be but Ubuntu handles some things better from my standpoint than 
Debian.
