Have you thought about getting a newer kernel? 2.6.30 is the current
stable.

Intel has built in 2.6.26 and up I believe. Possible only needing
firmware depending on the distro.

firmware-ipw2x00 would get it done in Debian.

I think you downgraded leaving lenny IMHO.
