No alert sound when desktop effects turned on in Karmic

Hello,

instead of making noise with the PC squeaker, the Gnome release coming
with Karmic is, at last, able to play a sound file as alert sound /
terminal bell (KDE can do this since 1754 IIRC).
But on my machine the terminal bell is audible only when compiz is
turned off. I've looked at the options in compizconfig-settings-manager
but saw nothing that seems to be related to muting the terminal bell
("Audible Bell" under "General Options" is checked).

Am I missing something obvious? If so, what?
