No print: jobs sit in CUPS

Hardware: Kubuntu 9.04, HP Officejet 4255 connected via USB to D-Link
router accessed as an online print server.

Until recently I have been able to print with the above setup, but
this week things have changed. It seems that jobs are not being sent
to the printer, I can see the jobs in the CUPS web interface but they
just stay there. The printer is powered on and connected properly. Why
isn't CUPS sending the jobs to the printer?
