You should be able to get the latest and greatest desktop (Jaunty /
karmic?) without any trouble.  the memory is the most limiting item of
the hardware, but will still be sufficient for a generic desktop.  It
will run into trouble if you try running more than 1 or 2 large
applications at the same time.  Fortunately, the DDR memory that the
Althlon XP probably wants is *really* cheap and now would be the perfect
time to update this system to 2gb of ran for about $30 US that would
extend the life of the system for years to come.
