Yes, grub is the default; however, you can use lilo or something else
if you wish. I think grub has its own site; just google for it and see what comes up. Also see below:

You might try installing grub from rescue mode or try fix broken
from menu. If grub is actually installed but you can"t see it try
running "update-grub" from the cli(cntrl-alt-F(1-6) If you don't see the grub boot loader on startup with normal kernel you should see a tty1 terminal, if so just sign in and sudo commands as needed. You can first try update-grub from cli. If that doesn't work, type grub at cli
and set up grub for your HDD, but, you will have to know what to do and I can't help there. So google or someone else can help, perhaps.
>From "aptitude search grub" typed from the cli, then enter, should show you if grub is installed. This is all basic stuff but you don't say what your level of expertize is. Probably do aptitude search grub first to see if grub ever got installed. I had no grub issues at all with a multi-partitioned HDD but remember it is beta and there are likely bugs. The only time I use a multi-drive using hardy, grub-update solved all my problems. HTH some. I'm no expert.

You should be able to boot to a tty terminal by just booting up
when X is not functioning. If not, what does the menu say when you
boot from the live CD. Try all the Function keys listed and you should find something that allow booting to a tty terminal. Good luck.
