Bob, it sounds like these Emachines are setting up their CD/DVD drives
as SLAVE, and the HD0 as MASTER (Am assuming these old machines IDE)
What is happening is you're then putting in your drive, there are now
two MASTER drives and the BIOS is hanging while looking for the correct
one (confusing itself as it should only see 1)
Does that make sense? I hope so.
To fix, make sure the jumpers (on the back of the drives) on the HD and
CD are different, The HD should usually be MASTER, and the CD should be
slave. (Or obviously you could run them on seperate cables).
