Hang-up installing Xubuntu along side Ubuntu (9.10b all)

Folks,
I've just installed Xubuntu-deskop as a backup to Gnome, but I can't
seem to get beyond the log-in screen. I can enter user name and
password, but all I get are the swarming fireflies for a bit, then a
blank screen, then the fireflies, then back to the log-in screen to
start over. I can log in to Gnome from this screen with no problem.
What have I mucked up? And how do I get Xfce to start up?
With best regards,
Pete
