Saving Thunderbird files to TXT

Hello,

I save files for Google Alerts and also some personal e/m received.
Before in Windows I could do group file save as ... .txt files. I am
not able to figure out how to do it in Thunderbird.

Is there a way to do this other than to open each file and do a copy
and then past into a .txt file?

If this is not possible is there an e/m client for LINUX that permits
this?

In the past I lost my e/m three times (including unread replies to this
question).
