Thanks Chris.  I guess I should have mentioned that I'm running kde 4 on kavmic beta.  Anyway I did Kmenu->apps->sustem->printing which is same thing in kde 4 but sadly I found your printer but not mine.  Guess there's nothing for me to do but use the brother deb files for mine.  They work good; but a real PITA to do.  IAC, I'll be watching the mail in case someone finds a different solution. Thanks all,
