Unable to hibernate with Ubuntu 9.04

In Ubuntu the root account is locked. For command line applications use 
sudo instead of su. If you want to run graphical applications with root 
privilege you can use the gksu command. Both sudo and gksu will ask for 
your password, not a root password. For some more details see
