I didn't read NoOp's link and no nothing about VOIP, etc. However, if you are satisfied with ekiga why not install it and use it. Aptitude show empathy and ekiga list no conflicts between the two so you probably can have both installed at the same time. HTH. You might also try to install all the Suggests items shown via aptitude show for empathy. Might help but I don't know.
