Maybe, Karmic's canonical and medibuntu repos are not uptodate for acroread. If someone knows why acroread is no longer available in ubuntu repos, I sure wish they would speak up.  I wasn't able to come across any reasons by googling but who reads all the hits that come up-:o))

I don't know if I would go as far as saying that acroread is no longer
available in the ubuntu repos, since Karmic is in Beta still, they may
not have finished updating the repos and may not until it hits the
final release.
