My workspace switcher cannot change names

Open a terminal, do 'gconf-editor', then browse to
apps/metacity/workspace names.

I've not tested this, but those certainly look like the right keys - I
have effects turned off, so I don't really need/see the names. (I'm
assuming you want the names to show up when it does the
compiz-slidy-thing when changing work spaces)
