Hello Amedee, Leonard, Colin - and all others who contributed,
I really appreciate your contributions, however, after trying out a couple
of ideas today that were given to me on this forum, and finding they did not
solve the problem, regretfully I must cease trying to fix UBUNTU 9.10
With Xmas coming on, and work commitments, I simply do not have the time.
Over the next week, I shall reformat the HDD and re-install 9.04 (which
never gave me a problem) - hopefully this will keep me going with LINUX.
If 9.04 woked flawlessly and 9.10 did not, and using the old HDD with
windows XP on it also works OK, I can only conclude that 9.10 is the
culprit. The many hours lost by this has been a big cost to me and most
frustrating. I hope UBUNTU will fix it.

My Very Best Wishes to all
