I generally do all the Ubuntu pre-install stuff even if not Karmic specified. When you install the scan key does it complete without error and can you do the test scan that they show in the check file listings. If not something is amiss so try again. Are you sure your using the right brscan number for your printer/scanner? It certainly if Brother in their wisdom would release the code so a Ubuntu driver could be released.

Leonard,
After running brscan-skeys, my scanner keys became active and I was able
to do a test scan and open it just fine in GIMP.
We had become used to using xsane to scan images, but I guess this
method will work just fine as well, and it might even be a bit more
efficient!
