Karmic screensaver asks for password

So, if I understand you correctly, when you the machine is idle (with
lid opened) for some time, the screen goes blank and when it resumes,
you are not asked for password?

Can you verify this with gconf-editor ?
/apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/lid_ac and
/apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/lid_battery
value should be "blank" in both cases.

Good catch, NoOp. Indeed it does nothing, but if it is checked (=true)
and if
/apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/use_screensaver_settings is not checked
(= false), 
it should override
apps/gnome-screensaver|lock_enabled.

Laura, besides what NoOp suggested above, you can try to change value of
/apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/use_screensaver_settings key and also
search within gconf-editor for potential xscreensaver  "leftovers".
