Well, I did get the tuner working, just not with Kaffeine yet.

Following the steps here:

And creating channel file first:

    cd /usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/atsc/usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/atsc/
    scan us-CA-SF-Bay-Area > ~/.azap/channels.conf

Then tuning:

    azap -r -c ~/.azap/channels.conf KRON-HD
    using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
    tuning to 731000000 Hz
    video pid 0x0041, audio pid 0x0044
    status 00 | signal 00c8 | snr 0073 | ber 000000ff | unc 000000ff | 
    status 1f | signal 00c8 | snr 00c3 | ber 00000000 | unc 00000000 | FE_HAS_LOCK
    status 1f | signal 00c8 | snr 00c8 | ber 00000000 | unc 00000000 | FE_HAS_LOCK
    status 1f | signal 00c8 | snr 00c8 | ber 00000000 | unc 00000000 | FE_HAS_LOCK

And in another window:

    mplayer -ni /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0


So, I must not be that far off with Kaffeine.
