What application have you tried in Ubuntu to import photos from your
digital camera? I would be surprised if all application do not provide
this functionality in one way or another. In other words, if you specify
the application you are using, someone can show how to achieve the
deletion of photos upon import.

If you do not have any preference at present, then perhaps you want to
look at gtkam (used to be default till Hardy I guess) or f-spot (is the
default now). gtkam puts your images in folders as you specify, f-spot
puts them in one folder (IIRC) and just tags them according to your
categories. I just prefer gtkam for this little reason that it lets you
arrange your photos in folders.

Finally, in my experience, the best method is to buy a cheap generic USB
card reader. You can then insert your camera's memory in to this card
reader and access the memory just like any other disk in your camera (it
is auto mounted the same way as any USB stick).

Regards.
