OK, then I guessed wrong and it doesn't seem to be a screen saver 
problem. If it happens even with single applications running, my first 
guess would be a memory problem. You could try the memtest option of the 
grub boot menu. Then there could be a problem with desktop effects - you 
could switch off desktop effects to find out if that is the reason. 
Finally, if that doesn't help, could you tell us something about your 
machine (CPU, memory, graphics card)? Then maybe someone has another 
idea what could be wrong.
