I tried wicd but it didn't seem to be better than NetworkManager :-)

The exact error message that is on the dam panel demanding my password 
follows:

" The application 'NetworkManager Applent' (usr/bin/nm-applet) wants 
access to the default keyring, but it is locked"


This is all Greek to me. It is caused by some failure in the keyring 
stuff. How can you just delete keyring?
