There is only one 8.10 DVD (for each platform), see:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/8.10/release/ - It is the Install/Live
CD.
The Desktop CD boots to a desktop environment. It can be used as it is, or
you can install it to your computer hard drive. It is mostly the same as
the DVD, except the DVD has more packages and also more install options
(text only, for example).
The Alternate CD is generally used for more advanced installs (expert mode
is on here), or for machine which do not run or do not run the desktop
environment very well.
