Is vsftpd running?  Do you have any other things that would prevent you 
from logging on to your ftp server such as having tcp wrappers enabled 
in the vsftpd.conf file?  Do you have local_enable=YES in your 
vsftpd.conf file?  If you do, can you connect from the server machine to 
itself?
