how can I get new software for dapper?

You could request a backport of the version you need. See
<https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports> section "How to
request new packages". If that doesn't help, you will probably need to
get the source of your desired version and compile it yourself.

The only upgrade Dapper -> Hardy I did went smooth but that was a
desktop machine not a server.
