how can I get new software for dapper?

Hey, ubuntu community, I have got a dapper server running and I need to install
bacula on it, but bacula in the repository(1.36) is so old that I am
afraid I may have issues with newer versions on other machines.

I searched the backport repo and 1.36 is already the newest. Anyone has
some idea handling this situation?

Besides I am open to upgrade but I had bad experience on my desktop on
ubuntu upgrade, for dapper to the next LTS version, is the upgrade
smooth without issues?
