I have used gnome, kde, icewm, fluxbox, openbox, xfce, awm, dwm, xmonad,
fvwm, jwm, and ion3, all on ubuntu.
I never use gnome or kde anymore.
I used fluxbox for about a whole year, then switched to openbox, which
is now my default.
But now I'm experimenting with the even lighter, tiling wms, and like
dwm, xmonad and ion3.
I use my computer for work, more than anything, and want it to be
efficient and uncluttered. A window manager should manage windows, and,
IMHO, otherwise stay out of the way.
I don't need an overgrown, flashy desktop environment.
I put xfce on my daughter's computer, although she also likes fluxbox.
