How to get a KDE to run

Dude,

  $ sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

It's a completely different package.

I always load both gnome and kde on my machines, and it always works - 
well, there are tens of regressions in 9.04 in both gnome and kde, but 
until then it had worked since badger.

There's no magic required; just pick gnome or kde when logging in.
