I never, never thought, I would move from KDE to GNOME. Than, after
waiting and reading all the news about the work done, KDE 4 arrived. I
gave it more than only one chance, but was utterly disappointed. I
always loved it, if my workspace was stylish, or at least able to be
configured as I like it. But KDE 4 allows this at a far too high cost.
It is sad, that a WM under Linux is "suggesting" you to buy the latest
hardware in order to get an acceptable performance.
Besides, since I do not have time to just play around with my Linux, I
have no use of candy plasmoids: during working I can not watch them to
feel and show how different I am with my stylish new non-Windows box
(actually, laptop). Once these performance problems are sorted out, I
will perhaps switch back, for I miss the shortcuts of Kmail (Evolution
is a "pain" with its stupid solution, but otherwise it does what I want
and need) and stuff like this. But for now, GNOME is more than enough
and is looking much better than a few years ago. This is not an attack
on KDE or advertisement for GNOME, just my frustrating experience.
As of Ubuntu - Windows, I do not think, that the disappearance of MS
would be the best solution or the proper goal. I am a big fan of
education so I put it like this. I would like to see MS as a producer of
such software, that are respecting and implementing standards, thus
allowing real diversity of OS and applications. Putting MS as the only
"bad guy" is also false, because most hardware/ compatibility issues are
linked to other "bad guys". They also have some bits to learn. Or not?

Tibor
