things may have changed a little (or a lot) when it comes to
reconfiguring X systems and all the sub-systems which dangle off it.
As your hardware works under single usermode then it's fair to assume
that there's nothing wrong with the physical kit and the problem is
purely software based. Deleting (with a backup of course) config fies
might be the quickest and easiest way out of this situation.
