Sorry to be pedantic, but you did not start a new thread. You replied  
to the original thread with a different subject, which is not the same  
thing. Any decent threaded mail reader will use the header information  
instead of the message subject to decide threading.

If you want to start a new thread, the *only* way to do that is to hit  
"new message", or whatever the equivalent is in your mailing, instead  
of just replying to an existing thread ...
