From:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading
----
"Install update-manager-core if it is not already installed:
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
Launch the upgrade tool:
sudo do-release-upgrade
Follow the on-screen instructions. "

Although (according to that link) it seems possible to upgrade Kubuntu
from 8.04 to 9.04, I wonder if you will have to upgrate to 8.10 first
for the server edition.
Unless really needed, you should consider waiting for the next LTS
edition or performing an additional clean install on a new partition
to check for possible issues with 9.04 (before getting rid of your
current install) since 9.04 is not LTS and as it has just been
released it is still prone to bugs and issues (check the release info
at: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/904 )
