Using the repositories (thru Synaptic or the command line) is 99% of
the time absolutely the right way to go. You aren't missing a thing,
and you are saving yourself a lot of headaches.
In this case however I have a dim recollection that the free version
in the repositories does not support USB somehow, but the 'no cost
personal use' version available for download directly does. Since he
wanted to work with an unconventional USB device, I thought the 'no
cost' version was a better choice.
