I want even more speed and are don't need the comfort offered by xfce or 
gnome try icewm (search synaptic)
I use icewm on my notebooks.

sudo apt-get install icewm icemc
Pleace check the package details befor performing this installation.
After installation you can select the Icewm session. The other 
desktop-environments gnome xfce are not affected by this installation.
